Hair Slippage

Submitted by Brian Miller on 05/20/2004 at 09:26. ( ) 209.43.98.51

I used the Pro Tan method for tanning my deer head. Had no problems, followed directions and all went well. But now that I have mounted it (2 days ago), while I'm grooming the mount I am loosing clumps of hair from around the front of the neck only. Firstly what can I do to prevent any more loss and secondly any theories as to why. I would appreciate any help offered.

Let it dry

2 days is not enough time for your mount to be properly dried. Give it about another week and then do the finish work on your mount. After this time, the hair will tighten up. For hair that is slipping while mounting, a small amount of acetone will tighten up the pours and lock in the hair. However, I would only use this method if for some reason the hair started to slip during the mounting process.

Brian, is this your first deer? On your next deer use a hair brush with medium to soft bristles, do not use a comb or wire pet brush.
A paper towel in your hand stroked with very light presure will work well also. A tooth brush will work in and around ears and eyes. Check out what causes slip, these spots may have started before you tanned it. But all hair will pull out if soaked in pickles and tans. Groom lightly while and after mounting, let dry for a week with a fan on it. Put the fan on while sewing up the back. Get some air on it asap.
