measuring hide

what is the best way to measure a cased skinned animal for a form? assume that it is tanned and rehydrated. i lay it out and measure it but the nose to base of tail measurment seems to come out un-proportionally wrong. for instance i just measured a bobcat that the tape measure wrapped 16" around the middle and length was nearly 35".

If you know what pose your customer wants, contact the supplier for the form and ask them how best to measure the hide as to determine which one it will fit. Reputable supply houses will do anything they can to help you out in this area-just to keep you as a customer.-Susan

Didn't rehydrate it, did you"

And if you did, you didn't stick your arms inside it and stretch it out far enough. Do that, measure the key points and then double those belly measurements and see how that works. Cats especially are tanned and elongated. When you rehydrate them and stretch their girth areas, your length comes back into line. Think of it as a T-shirt. If I wear a medium, the hemline comes up across my fat gut. But when I get an XXL, the hemline is where it's supposed to be because the girth now fits properly.
