I have acquired a extra large Kudu shoulder mount, but, however, the horns are missing. There are two cartlidge nubs approx 8" long only Can anyone tell from a shoulder mount photo if it is a Lesser or Greater Kudu. I want to either finish it off with reproduction horns or acquire some from another taxidermist who may have some or sell it as is. I have no experience with African Kudu.
Any help, or guidance is much appreciated. Thanks to all that reply

Bob,
I personally can't tell by a photo, however you should be able to tell by size. The Lesser Kudu runs about a 7-7 1/2 eye to nose and about a 19-20" neck (at least those that get mounted). The Greater Kudu trophies run 9-11 on the eye to nose and any where from 26-33 inches on the neck. Should be real obvious what you have based on that. Hope this helps!
Doug:
Thanks. The Kudu is 10 1/2" eye to nose with a 34 neck.A Greater Kudu then, is what I have.I don't really have a clue what I will do with it.

Bob, a lesser kudu is much smaller then the greater kudu, also the lesser kudu had no maine hair on his neck,I have a set of 52" greater kudu horns if interested e-mail me.

I have seen as many as a dozen sets of kudu horns on ebay at any time. A lot of these sellers get thse horns by the crate and if you contact them they can tell you if they have matching pairs. The price goes from reasonable to very overpriced, considering how common this stuff really is.
Thanks again, old Fart for your imput. I did get into that site and as you said, found many.As for another note, I must say that I have enjoyed your many responses to viewer questions over the years. Thanks for taking the time to help others. It is much appreciated
