A week ago I was bitten or scratched by a farm kitten. Can not remember which kitten, farm has over 20 of the them. It bled alot, but has healed well. Kitten did not attack me--my fault for picking him up into my arms incorrectly. Doctor & my local Vet tell me to take shots just in case he was carrying rabies because of no vaccinations. I am medicine sensitive, am on heart meds, Lipitor, Estratest and Clonazipin. Am 57 yr.old female scared to have the shots because of possible side affects, but scared not to have them. Any advice, much appreciated to calm my nerves. Thanks.

Take the shots

You're taking a chance with your very life by not doing so. The shots are in the arm and they are virtually painless. I think I had a localized fever around the site after the first one, but that was it. It's a series spread over a month. It should have no effect on any of those medications. Ask your physician if you can take an extra Clonazapam before you get the injections. That should settle you down and easy the psychological impact of the shots. After the first one, I think the rest will be much easier.

Remember, you MAY react to the injections, but you WILL DIE if the cat had rabies and you don't get the shots NOW.

I agree with George

I would say take the shots. I've had them...its a set of 3 shots. The shots will also vaccinate you against future rabies exposure. The only problem I had was when the nurse used an air gun instead of a needle. You talk about painful! The only other option is to have all the kittens killed and tested for rabies.

Ill try to say this tactfully...

We sure as heck arent who you should be referring with! This is a taxichat with everyday people. You need to be speaking with a doctor, as well as heeding his advice. I personally wonder why folks do this. AFTER you get treatment, then sure, feel free to express your feelings here, we all would be flattered. But first things first. Get help, and good luck!

I don't think thereare a lot of MD's that post here...

You dont get Rabies from a scratch

This response submitted by RJ Simington on 8/22/04 at 12:33 PM. ( animalartsnw@charter.net ) 68.186.0.103

Rabies is transmitted through the saliva in animals, That means you would have to be bitten or get saliva in an open wound to contract the disease.

If you were only scratched & it already healed then you should be past the incubation time for rabies.

If your doctor was worried about it he would have already given you the Rabies vacine shots.

The pills they are talking about are probably amoxaciline or some type of antiinflamitories to prevent any infection such as tetnas or something like that.

Ask Your Personal Physision, he will already know what medication you are on & what your body can & cant handle.

Had some great advice on rabies by eating fresh fruit and plenty of fresh juice NOT! See your Dr. and do what he says!

Marlene Please...

Marlene please take all the advise to talk to your physician or cardiologist. He or she will know the best thing to do for your health and well being.

But you really need to thin down those cats. With no shots, if they aren't now they will start to spread rabies. Heaven forbid you would get bitten. Also, 1 cat will kill a trash bag full of birds and small game a month. And not for food, just their nature.
