NEED GOOD RELIABLE TANNERY FOR A BEAR SKIN REASONABLY CLOSE TO HOOD RIVER, OREGON. Have a fresh skinned, fleshed and salted black bear hide. This is my son's first and we are going to try to do a rug. Not a big trophy but as his first it is to him. Any reliable tannery for a dry finish hide close by? Alternatively, we may try the kit from WASCO. Is that sufficient for a hide from a bear about 225 lbs?Thanks, Vic

has done a bunch of bears for me and has always done a top notch job on them. I've had them done at other places on this list and they did a fine job, just not as nice or as fast as Yost. Very nice people to do business with as well. It's worth the extra couple $$$ to ship them to WI.
Must agree on YOST. I stretch hundreds of bear rugs a year and YOST has tanned many bears for my customers for the past 8+ years. I understand Moyle does an equally fine job.I'm sure any tannery who neutralizes and oils the hides well will give you a fine finished product.
They are your closest tannery that will do a great job on Bears,
IF it has been properly fleshed & salted.
It sounds like you are just a beginner. Let me give you a word of advise, & you can do what you want with it.
DONT TRY TO TAN IT YOUR SELF> YOU WILL RUIN IT.
I dont care what the suply magazine tells you.
Bears are one of the worst animals to get all of the grease removed from the leather.
I am a full time taxidermist & tan all of my clients animals in shop , BUT NOT BEARS.
I send them to Moyle & have had great luck with them.
