Can somebody mount 12 lifesize wild american horses?

Submitted by gregory on 11/4/04 at 12:59 PM. ( mcsorleys@hotmail.com ) 24.213.179.201

Artist seeks someone to work on major art project with, but first needs to know if it can be done? I'm aware many of the wild horses out west are kept in-check by the gov't, some need to be put down, others are rounded-up and auctioned. Can we get a hold of some of these for taxidermy/art purposes? Thank you.

Tried it already. BLM gave me a big NO and sent me on my way. It is a shame. They rounded up 1400 wild mustangs here and I heard several were put down on the spot for injuries. They just left the carcasses for the coyotes to eat. I tried to get acces to the land after BLM left, but the landowners would not allow it. What a waste. BLM does not want any part of the horses to be taken for taxidermy purposes as it will put them in a poor light with HSUS and other animals rights people. Good luck to you. Best bet is to check with veterinarians or go to Canada.

It's ok to kill the horses needlessly (or put them down due to injury), but it is not ok to use the carcasses and hides for taxidermy purposes. I understand, by god that could offend someone now couldn't it? What a bunch of crap. I am more offended by the killing and letting the dead horses totally go to waste, then by using them for something purposeful like displays etc. Typical BLM crap. They don't make any sense.

I agree with Evelyn! That is such CRAP! They are so afraid of offending a bunch of tree huggin' DORKS, what about offending people who only want to show respect for the life and beauty of these awesome creatures by bringing illustrated life back to them thru taxidermy? Such a waste!

And Wilson if so many people have asked about them, I'm sure they could have a waiting list like our game commission does with illegally taken and road kill animals. And if one person on the list couldn't take it or pick it up the next guy might. Anything is better than letting it rot for nothing. As for being coyote food, those suckers are in no danger of starving out to extinction.

If someone calls me to have his/her horse mounted, I'll be hooking up the trailer before I even get off of the phone.

Now you tell me what is the difference between you mounting a poodle for some old lady or me mounting someones dead horse? I have a Rottweiler right now that I am mounting for a couple. I tried to talk them out of it but they wouldn't hear of it. So who am I to tell them whether they are wrong or right, ethical or unethical. Bottom line is, once something is dead it is going to decay. Why not try to preserve it if that is possible.

I am more offended by just letting the carcasses rot away then doing something creative with the hide and or bones.

I was talking about you picking it up for yourself [free] not paying to have it mounted.
Last thing most of us need is a horse cape laying around.
Their not a big seller you know.

What is it you need ?

You need mounted horses for a museum ?

I may be able to convince the museum I work for to sell their collection, I did most of them a while back, like 15 -20 years ago but they are in excellent shape.
Most are in running positions opened mouth as it was used with waxed Indian figures ridding along a Bison chase scenery.

They are taking a lot of Storage space.
I'll ask if you are interested?

Horse auctions

Horse auctions often have horses that end up going to slaughter for various reasons...sometimes they are old, crippled, etc., and need to be put down to end their suffering. (Of course, there are those that end up on dinner plates, too, I guess.)
