Freezing a pelt

As a beginner I have been on a course but I did not learn the techniques of tanning a pelt (it is unlikely that I will get a deer in the next year or two). With that aside, how important is it to salt the underside of the pelt before it goes into the freezer? If the mammal is un-gutted, then should salt be applied to the outside of the fur?

Thank you in anticipation,

kindest regards

Don't salt a skin if you plan to freeze it. Salting keeps it from freezing properly. Only salt hides that have been properly fleshed, turned, and split. You can allow them to dry with the salt on them. They will keep a long time in the salted state.
