I ever used was canned tuna fish packed in oil. If you are using leg hold traps, all you need to do is place a piece of shiny foil on the pan and place at the water's edge, or in the open. A little tuna smell won't hurt on dry sets, but no coon can resist the shiny reflective surface.
No bait needed for coon. Coons are one of your more easy furbearers to trap.
than what type fish, peanut butter, etc. you use for bait. The idea is to place the traps where the coons walk, or at least VERY close by. With this done any number of baits can be used sucessfully. What type sets are you trying to make? Are you using steel traps, or live trap cages? When I trapped, I made sure the fish market guy was my friend. He would save heads and guts, and any shrimp that would go bad on him, and put them in a plastic bucket for me to pick up. (Tip call every day to see what he has for you, and don't forget to come by to get them when you say you will ! ) I have caught many with just the juice off this stuff poured near my trap. (Not too close or they will probably dig it up) I have caught hundreds with a piece of aluminum foil wrapped around the pan of my trap, and smoothed down. (You will have to bring extra, and replace it on every catch, but the foil is lite. Never used this trick on dry land. I always set traps in about 3 to 4 inches of water at the edge of a water hole, stream, etc. I like to find a log if possible, for them to walk out and fish from. A little fish juice, sardine oil, tuna juice etc. on the top side of the log with the trap placed beside it is deadly. T make sure he will see the foil shining, put a pinch of fish on the SIDE of the log right beside the trap. If you are frozen up, and every thing ice you are going to have to use dry land techniques/sets. There are a lot of oils coons are attracted to. Anise, peppermint, bannana etc. , that can be used to CALL an animal from a distance. Ther is no telling how many "incidental" coon I have caught while setting for fox and coyotes. They will investigate red fox urine, skunk, and most of the baits sold by the major trapping supply houses. Beaver castor in lures attracts them also. Hope this helps a little. Really don't know what you are using to trap, but good luck to you. With enough experience at it you will find the critters easy to nab. Swampfox
Food ether can or Dry cereal, of Course cat nip attracts them from afar
I have had good success with anything smelly. I use honey grahm crackers that have gone stale, peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna/sardines, fish guts, and even had good success using crayfish scented fishing scent.
use corn apples or any other vegetable
like the little brown and serve ones....i have set many traps, and they always take the sausage first!
