Get one of those covert a caller by johnny stewart, that way you can use a regular tape player or cd player. i really havent been calling long but i know i like it better than any other i have seen.
I had a Phantom, and it did a pretty good job. Hoqwever, it had a speaker with 60' of "pain in the arse" wire to deal with. The new Phantoms are remote controlled and are money well spent. That said, I bought a Loudmouth. Now this is a QUALITY piece of equipment all the way. It has a remote that works up to 200 yards. You can change sounds with the remote, and the sound cards hold 16 sounds. You can also change volume with the remote. You can load any CD, casette, or MP3 sounds onto it if you want to replace sounds that come with the unit. There are only two drawbacks to this caller. You can't turn the caller on/off with the remote and there is no battery life indicator on it. This Loudmouth really works well and I highly recommend it. Good luck.
I just got my son one of the hand held Cass Creek calls, I also got the speaker phone with a 25' cord. This is simple to use and it sounds pretty good. Good starter caller for the kids, us big guys used the rechargeable Johnny Stewart caller, we've used it for about 10 years now. good luck....
I have tried dang near everyone out there and foxpro or the loudmouth are my two favorites.

Get him hand calls and teach him or let him learn how to use them. They are MUCH MUCH better and also are better for call shy varmits.
Get the tally-ho and a squeaker and your in business. Its not that hard to learn and they are much better.

I do alot of predator hunting in the dakotas coyotes mainly and in my opinion there is nothing else that compares. Plain, simple, no cords no crap, you dont need something w/ 200 different call options and a bunch of gadgetry to cause problems. Mine has jackrabit, cottontail, woodpecker, coyote serenade, distressed pup, crows, and snow geese, I have used it for 6-8 years and have never wanted any other sounds. The thing is awsomely portable, has plenty of volume (even out here)and almost makes it own batteries. This invention could quite possibly surpass that of the wheel. I love it! Buyem a fox pro then buyem each a couple of sceeries, have them pratice the sounds of the jack and cottontail on them, as they have their place too.
fox pro works good for me
I like the Foxpro also. They now have an economical model that might make a good starter caller. At any rate,I would go with a digital caller. That's the latest technology and it looks like they are all going that way.At any rate,go to www.allpredatorcalls.com.They have them all, electronic, mouth calls and accessories plus good prices(I saved $100.00 on my Foxpro, over Cabelas)and they are real pleasant and knowledgeable to deal with.
