Ever see an eight foot tall Jackalope? Well I have, and sober as a judge. I had a few dozen witnesses too. You can see the critter for yourself, along with lots of other jackalopes (jackalopi?) any day of the week you chose to do so.
Where? You might ask. Has ole cur finally lost it? Nope! On Interstate 25, East of Casper, Wyoming is a town called Douglas which is the Jackalope capital of the world. There is an eight foot tall statue of a jackalope right in the middle of Douglas.
In 1932, a taxidermist named Douglas Herrick "invented" the jackalope. According to the tale, Douglas and his brother had been out hunting jackrabbits. When they came into the shop, they tossed the rabbits on the floor and one came to rest against the horns of an antelope. According to Douglas's brother, the horns looked like the rabbit had grown them. Douglas then mounted the jackrabbit with the antelope horns and the "jackalope" was born.
The first was sold to a hotel in Douglas and for years after that, Herrick made more and more jackalopes for sale to a growing tourist industry. In 1985, the Governor of Wyoming declared the Town of Douglas to be the Jackalope capital of the world, and so it is today.
This is the real story about the horney bunnies.....check it out.
