Nose question

Submitted by Mark on 12/21/04 at 10:26 PM. ( ) 136.181.195.45

Still having an issues with some of the noses on my mounts, mainly foxes, yotes, etc. As they dry they lose some of their fullness. They are skinned properly and injected with preserve it. Besides an artificial nose are there any other products that might solve this issue. Thanks......

in my mind nothing beats artificial noses when done properly but you can try a little clay on the nose pad

I have a nose question as well.

A quick question, I recently did a lifesize black bear that my wife had got a year or so ago, it was dry tanned and I used the McKenzie artificial nose, Med/large I cut out the form and mounted the nose, cut out the nose area and used hide pase for the whole bear and applied a thin line of super glue, Zap-Gap to be exact to the edge of the hide where it meets the nose. the question is what do you use to blend in the distinct line between the nose and the hide? I was thinking of using some magic sculpt and feather it to blend, then paint the nose black with some flesh in the nostril and maybe feather some burnt umber from the hair side towards the nose, sort of blend it together.. Am I way off or am in on the right track? if not what do or would you use? you can reply on here or e-mail. Thanks, Jesse

real noses are not that difficult.

You can rebuild a fox or coyote nose with a little sculpting epoxy and texture it with a piece of sandpaper. It works great. And you do not have to purchase an artificial nose. Also make sure you thin the nose enough when final fleshing to cut down on the shrinkage.

More then one injection

If you use preservz it, as the mount dries you need to re-inject the nose and plump it back up. This may take two or three days with a couple of injections per day to do it right. One injection alone is not going to do it. If you use cast all, then one injection is enough since the cast all hardens very quickly and will prevent the nose from shrinking.

Forgot to add the fix

what you could do at this point is to resoak the nose just enough to make the noseskin flexible and re-inject the nose with either cast all or preservz it. Plump it back up and keep and eye on it as it dries.

Jesse... On your Bear nose, I would use Apoxie Clay.

masters blend

On mammal noses, I use masters blend and inject plenty of it in about 4-6 different places. You can put the 2 parts in the freezer for about a minut or 2, then mix them together. This slows down the kik time.

What's wrong with the real nose

Have you ever tried to thninly shave the real nose skin, then sculpture the real nose in clay on the form? Next rub glue into the shaved skin and then apply to the clay sculptured nose you just took time to do....then taxi the skin to make the once real nose look like a real nose. Maybe I am tooooo old fashioned for using the real nose!

heres how i do it

i have an artificial nose on hand to make sure the real nose matches it - i cut off the nose on the form and then replace with apoxie sculpt - when i mount i mold the nose to look like the artificial nose - very fast and very realistic and no seam line - learned this on a van hoesen video
