Jaw set

Hello All,
I was wondering if any of you have used the slim line bobcat jaw sets with throat and lips attatched from Mohrr and if so what do you do with the real lips? I was thinking a lip slot would be cut just above the lip line on the jaw set and the lips tucked, but after recieving the set I don't think that would be the proper way to do this. I have never used a Jaw set like this before but I think they would look great if I could figure out the right way to use them.
Thank you for any information and hope you all have a Very Merry Christmas.

mouth in the form using bondo.Try to keep the bondo off the lips-it will take the paint off,not hard to fix though.Don't make the bondo quite flush with the lip-leave room for the thickness of the skin. You could easily do this blending work with your favorite epoxy putty too.Forget the slot,a bobcat lip is not thick enough most places to allow for that and the plastic mouth. When you mount it,use super glue gel to attach the lip.All the bare lip skin has to be trimmed off your skin-don't be scared, now.I glue 1/4th of the lip line at a time ie. center of the muzzle to corner of the mouth etc.,then apply the skin and butt it right against the plastic lip.I apply the glue, not just at the edge of the lip,but about 1/4 inch back from it all the way around. The lip skin is stretched out,so you will have to gradually bunch it as you go-very easy to do,you will see.If you butt the skin up very carefully, tune it again before you go to bed and again the following morning you probably won't have to do any finish work later.I have used this mouth and it works very well and makes a nice, finished mouth. When you get used to the process it goes very fast too.The only drawback is that there's only one size.I wish there were a larger one.For anyone used to using artificial noses, this mouth is a snap to use.Hope this helps you.

I can't tell you how others do it

I have never seen that jaw set, but I make my own that way. I cut a slot to tuck the uppers on some species, but always mold the oral tissue on the bottom jaw. When I mount the animal, I trim the lip to the beginning of the hair line and then mill away an amount under the molded lip membrane to the depth of the hide. when mounting, the lower lip is glued to that area so that the hide is flush. Gaps are filled with Magic-Sculpt and modeled to flush with sculpting tools. When set the epoxy clay is painted to match.

If the upper lip is the same, then I would mill it so that the skin would fit flush and treat it the same way. The fur on the upper lip should cover the seam.

Like I said, I have never seen one of those jawsets, but I do have photos of one of my grizzly sets before and after the hide was attached. I you would like I can send those to you for reference.

Your post wasn't up when I started. Didn't mean to step on ya. I have been making jawsets like that for twenty years, just didn't ever sell them to others....won't now, LOL.

I use a milling bit on a Foredom tool to recess to the thickness of the skin, so the fit is flush to the plastic. Like Jim said, it is a snap to do, once you get the hand of it. I use ZAP and the accelerator (kicker) to anchor as I go. If you can sculpt, any jawset can be turned into one of those gizmos.......Cheep!

I'm with you Cur

I have done quite a few just like you are talking about.Especially bears.I always liked to grind a slot around the bear lips to tuck about1/8" smooth skin into and then puttiedthat later. The set he is talking about is more of a "mouth cup",to borrow a phrase, than a "jawset".It is a complete mouth with lips and very nicely painted.I didn't mention before, but I am the guy that sculpted the original of that one for Harvey Mohr and he did a nice tongue for it.It fits about a 15 lb.cat.So I have a little experience using it...and no,I don't get any royalties, just offering a little advice 'cause I have used it.You didn't step on me either.I'd love to see your grizzly if you'd feel like sending a pic my way.Thanks.I haven't used the accelerator yet,but it really sounds like the way to go.I'm going to try it on the next one. Thanks for the tip.
