fox ears

How close to the tip of the ear do I need to get while turning the ears of a grey fox? I have read 1/4" to 1/2", is this really good enough?

or the edges will curl and the mount wont look attractive,,,,,,,,,,,,i usually open the ears up about three quarters of the way and fill with salt,,,,,,,,then finish splitting them after the pickle bath,,,,,,,,the skin will be tougher then and wont tear as easily,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hope this helps,,,,,good luck,,,,,,,jim
