my friend shot a deer and we found it about 30 minutes later the guts had been pulled out and the hind quarter had been eaten on buy what we think was cyoties but we did not see them. we tag the deer and took the back strap and the front quarters. If the animal that ate the rear quarter of the deer before we found it had rabbies can you get rabbies from eating the meat that was not eaten on.

If the skin was not ripped where you took the meat from it should be safe.

I had the same thing happened to me a few years ago, Iam still here, though I Bite my wife once in a while,LOL

Rabies is NOT a concern here, almost guaranteed

Animals with rabies don't eat. Their throats swell shut and they just stop. Unless you're in one of those rare winter epidemic areas, rabies TENDS to be a hot weather disease.

Are coyotes susceptible?

Someone once told me that coyotes didn't often get rabies, I suppose it was an Urban Legend

Every warm blooded animal is susceptible

You don't USUALLY see it in rodents (especially the mice and shrews along with rabbits and voles/moles)because their metabolism is so high. You also don't see it in opossums because their metabolism is so slow. Everything else if fair game.

Can I get it while skinning animals?

This response submitted by Charley on 1/14/05 at 9:39 PM. ( Charley011583@yahoo.com ) 68.11.56.19

I get a lot of animals off of Ebay and this website, frozen whole for taxidermy. Since I am not the one killing the animal I won't know if it seems sick. If I get an animal that had rabbies and lets say I cut my hand while skinning it or if my dog licks some of the blood can me or my dog get it.

oh geez

Here we go again with the dreaded "rabbies". George, do rabbies get rabies? Just wondered!

Use proper handling protocols

Rabies contraction can be prevented by using proper protocols when handling suspect skins. Use gloves, goggles, mask and skin away. The most dangerous parts of an infected mammal are the oral tissue, the brain and spinal cord. George is right, mammals with onset rabies do not normally eat. Chances are that your deer is not infected at all since most rabid mammals are long dead by onset of winter. Besides, coyotes are not as susceptible as some other species anyway. Just listen to George......I do.
