I recently found a mound of dirt and a burrow. I live in Nebraska, so what would it be? It looks to be recent and I can spot tracks, but I cant identify them.

i have seen this before in my travels abroad, although it is very rare! i believe what you have come across is what we scientists reffer to as a gopher. do not worry though, they can eaisly be removed using a garden hose.

Is the mound of dirt the result of digging the burrow, or just a pushed up mound of dirt? Is the mound round, with the hole in the center, or is it a pile of dirt at the outer edge of the hole? Is it on flat ground or on a grade or embankment?....So many questions, but so many animals dig burrows - from mice to grizzly bears. (Of course, I doubt a bear dug the hole.....LOL) It could be a gopher, a ground squirrel, a chipmunk, a prairie dog, a woodchuck or groundhog, or any number of small rodents. Size matters, let's start with the size of the hole...If Western Nebraska, there are no groundhogs there.
I forgot badgers. If the mound of dirt is just pushed up, with no adjacent tunnel, except a mound over a subterrean tunnel, it may be a mold............Or a little kid with a shovel.
This is quite possibly a alein burial! Stay clear of the site. You may have already been contaminated with foreign matter. This has happened over at area 51 before. You must isolate yourself from anyone. You will need to have certain test ran before you can go into a public area. Have you seen any stange looking flying objects around this area? This is a serious matter. DO NOT take this as a joke. These little critters have the capibilities of doing some weird things. I will contact the authorities asap. Stay close to your computer and keep me updated of any type of symptoms you start having. We can control this but YOU MUST HELP. If not the state of Nebraska could go into a state of shock. Keeps this quite. Do you have a wahalla wally meter? You can use this to get readings around the area of question. Will stand by until we hear from you again. Over and Out
It's a badger.Ground squirrels don't operate in this country,this time of year.
if there seems to be more than one hole in a 5 foot radius i would say its a woodchuck my grampa's farm has ton and there a hassel
Twas me burried treasure I be seekin' . Best bet to find out what dug that burrow is to watch it and see what shows up ! You could put one of those game camera things close buy to catch a photo of it . I don't think water would be too good an idea if this burrow is large . I wouldn't want to come face to face with a mad ,wet badger ! LOL Bradlee
a foot in diameter with dirt in a V formation around it. So bart, you smart ass, it's not a gopher-kill them all the time. I have a game camera. what do you think. Im pretty sure its not a woodchuck-kill alot them, too!
...have any armadillos. They will make a burrow with a mound of dirt at the entrance.
first ex, my second is in your back yard ( I didn't have time to fill in the hole)
