i intend to mount a red fox in a leaping position with its paw on a pheasant. just wanted to know how other people tackle this? should i mount the bird first with the wires coming out where i want it to meet the pad or vice-versa? thanks

I've done maybe a dozen of these or close variations. I like the wire to come out of the paw. I then cut the feathers and drill into the foam of the completed bird mount. I fill the hole with bondo and bury the wire up to the bird. The paw covers the cut away feathers and bondo and the wire should have enough flex to adjust the position to your liking.--I don't love this pose as the fox looks un-natural to me but customers absolutely love them...
