Help with Skunk

Submitted by Eric on 3/14/05 at 11:53 AM. ( plstaxidermy@winco.net ) 165.166.123.240

I have a skunk brought to me to be mounted, that was a roadkill and of course, has alot of odor left with him. There is no damage to the hide, but he is very ripe. My question is, how do i get the smell out of this critter before I start to skin him? Also, what can I do to keep the smell off of me while doing this? Thanks For The Help, Eric

I skinned it while it was half frozen (didn't help) Then I put it in a solution of
1 Qrt 3% peroxide
1/3 cup of baking soda
1 Tbs of Dawn (i think. The recipe is posted here somewhere)

The 1st time I did it I didn't think it worked, So I fleshed and salted and did it again and I couldnt smeel it at all. Then I tanned it.

Be sure to degrease it good. So far that is my bigest mistake.

Just wanted to add

Find a old rain suit put that on,fine a tree away from the house, skin the skunk and make sure the wind is at your back, always were gloves.Wash the skunk as soon as yon skin it, Dry it off and salt
it,put were the air can blow around it.Let it blow off for a couple of days. Then wash it in your 3%peroxide and dawn again. just don,t rush it.
