I have got a coyote and have just finished fleshing it as good as possible. I have made a fleshing beam and a fleshing knife, but the knife doesn't seem to do much. What is the best household item I could use to loosen the fat so I could easily scrape it off? Also, what is the process of making a pickle tanning solution?

I have used steel wool on birds since i dont have a wire wheel, so this might work on a mammal, but have never tried it. I do most of my fleshing with the big blade of a larger swiss army knife and paring knives.
I can tell, new people want it "easy". I have seen somewhere that a piece of glass can be used as a fleshing tool or scraper. But all you need is to do the best you can. It is never easy fleshing anything unless you have done it several times and taught yourself the skill and dexterity. Do you want a pickle recipe? Or, a tanning recipe? A pickle tanning solution would be Krowtann. But we think that you really need to use the orange search button on the left here. We can't tell you everything.J
make sure your fleashing beam fits your coyote skin kind of tight, you should have adecent knive, one with two handles so you can cut evenly. my fleashing knive i keep pretty sharp but i have afeel for it and my fleashing beam. IT is a lot of work if you haven't done one before, you have to get that membrainfrom the neck down around the shoulders and back i've been fleashing coyote all after noon and even with proper hand fleashing tools it is alot of work if your going to do a good job. You must remove allthe fleash or you won't get an even tan.
i recently did a mallard. kind of experimental never done anything before. A taxidermist told me after i couldnt get my hands on any wet tanning agent that i could borax the crap out of it to dry the fat. will it start stinking?
Coyotes are no fun but they pay the bills to. I always start mine
with a 15 min. comb job to get rid of burrs. I use a necker knife
and rub some borax on it as i go. Ive found this makes the knife
grab better. Dont be in any hurry all you will get is alot of holes.
Just my thought.
