older coyote skin for lifesize mount?

I recently purchased a coyote skin comercially tanned. It is skinned for a lifesize mount. The problem I have is I recently went to rehydrate
an older doe cape and it fell apart like a wet paper bag. I was told this happened because the cape was so old. The coyote skin I have was tanned in 1996 and has not been kept frozen. Does anyone have a sure fire way to rehydrate without the same results as the doe.

your dry tanned capes if not mounted within a yr are suspect to acid swelling and or rot, ive done some that wre dry tanned up to 6 yrs. MAKE SURE that you add a handfull of salt/gallon of water in your rehydration soak or it will most likely fall apart
