STANKIN' COYOTES!

Submitted by Robin on 5/9/05 at 7:17 PM. ( wildlifeprofiles@yahoo.com ) 68.156.6.130

I've tried it all! I've tried commercial tanning, extreme washing after being fleshed, degreasing, cussing, even refusing to mount them. But, I still have odor problems with about three out of five coyotes I mount. Does anyone have a solution? If no solution, then can someone recommend a "HIGH" quality tannery? Thanks.

did you try a deoderizor? i use a commercial tannery and have no probs. i prefer wet tans, but when it comes to greasy specimens like yotes and bears i go dry and rehydrate , never had a smell issue this way, even when i did my own tanning a good degreasing and a wash in malagon did the trick, knolblochs makes a deodorizig wash that works well also

What odor bothers you?

I mean is it a matter of your perception, or a real odor problem?

Because, most commercial tanneries use a couple different "smells" in their process that is part of churning out a finished product. Example: there is no other tannery that produces a pelt that smells like Moyle.

Is the odor coming from the ears? The feet? Anywhere else?

What is the smell? Describe it's character.
Like... a sweet rot smell, a dead animal smell, a chemically smell, a fatty / fishy smell, or something else?

If you give some info. you may be able to be helped.

Description of smell

The yote I am working on now was just plain rank. I would describe the smell as the smell of rancid blood, or much like when you pop a scent gland on a deers leg. Do coyotes have scent glands? A lot of the smell came out when I triple washed it with Dawn. Then I soaked in diluted Fabric softener for 30 min., then rinsed, pickled, tanned, and now it barely stinks, but I plan to drench it in Fabreeze after it is mounted.

i use krowtann and dishwashing liquid...

Try SAMS

I get a concetrated de-oderizer from SAMS that works ! Comes in a gallon jug, but will make many gallons once mixed. Also you can put it in a spray bottle and use as a air freshener.

Is that Odo-ban? I get that from Sam's and it's awesome. It's an odorizer and bacteriacide. I use it in a spray bottle or as a wash. Not to be used as a degreaser b/c it simply doesn't have those properties. I add it with Dawn. I've used it in the house and dog kennel as a deodorizer/cleaner.
