Price for black bear rug?

Submitted by NorthWolf on 7/8/05 at 4:03 PM. ( ) 24.111.90.134

I have a very large (older, but in good condition) black bear rug mount. It was kept put away and never used as a rug. I would like to sell it, but I don't know how to price it. How much could I reasonably expect to get for it? I will try to get some photos later. Thanks very much!

Black bears are the most "useless" trophies to be had. (Boy wait for that one to hit. LOL) It doesn't have horns or antlers, it doesn't mount realistically (Be honest, how many times have you EVER seen a bear with it's mouth open charging? And since when did shooting one over a donut box make a realistic mount?) If you rug them, you can't walk on them (regardless of what your girlfriend/wife/significan other says) and who wants to take up a whole wall with hanging one? AND THATS FOR PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY SHOT THEM. You're wanting to sell it to someone who has no stake in it. They're just a tough sell and you're going to be held captive to very low demand for it in the first place. If you actually GET a buyer, don't try to drive such a hard bargain. You may be lucky to get an offer of half that.

Many avenues to sell

Asking price on this specimen is contingent on the condition it is in. A large (6'or larger) bear rug could sell for $500.00- $800.00. If you are not successful finding a buyer on this site, try antique dealers, interior designers, outdoor themed restraunts, sporting good stores( if they are not interested, they may know of someone who is or allow you post a for sale note.)

Mary

Tough to sell

I had five of them for sale. I thought they would be a great way to make some extra money, so I bought 5 hides from various hunters over the last two years. After the cost of the hide($100), the rugshell, eyes, repro nose, ears and Buckeye jawset($135.00), tanning and shipping($100.00)and rugging costs and shipping ($150.00), I ended up with an investment of roughly $485/$500 per rug, not counting my time. And I still have 4 of them left.

I'm interested

I been looking for a nice black bear for the cabin. The bears I've seen already made into rugs had very thin fir, either summer shot or badly tanned. What I've been loking for is about a 6', thickly furred. I've got a great spot that gets little traffic and would be perfect. Besides, maybe one on the floor will scare away the real ones that constanly come by and peak in the windows.

wow

Anyone that says bear hides are a tough sell needs to find a better place to sell them...or do better work. I sold three last year. Two right at 6' and one that was 6'6". $1200, $1250 and $1500. All were prime hides and quality work.

I HAVE ONE TOO!

I have a thick hide 6' rug that was tanned and done professionally as a rug in BC back in 1993. At that time the cost was $120 a linear foot. I know that it's more than that now. Unfortunately my Field Setter chewed the toes and claws from the front foot. I have been offered $750 for it years ago. I have since moved and cannot acommodate the rug. I might sell it for the right price. All of you taxidermists out there know how easy this would be to fix. Give me a shout if anyone is interested................:-)Great in front of the fireplace or for the cabin, whatever.

Well make me an offer
