Submitted by y on 7/11/05 at 7:37 PM. ( ) 68.85.50.2

I have a fox that has badley burned lips.. I mean hard! Can I rehydrated these? If so what is the best way? Can I soak the hide in a saltwater solution before I try to flesh the rest of it? If I can't do anything with the lips I don't wnat to waste my time. Thanks in advance.

A spray bottle filled w/ Lysol and water. 50/50 When I encounter freezer burn I soak and work elsewhere on the hide. I keep working the spot and checking till it softens up. I have gotten through some really burned paws and ears this way. Dont give up. Good Luck

Stop Rot!

I had the same problem with a grey fox, I put Stop Rot on them, then went with KROWTANN, I was able to turn them during the tanning portion of the project.

Donot use the saltwater, remember the sea is saltwater and tons of bacteri grow in it.

Mark, you're lucky

The Lysol is nothing but an accident waiting to happen. It may "kill bacteria on contact" but it's not doing anything else afterwards but setting you up for slippage. Lysol has no redeeming chemicals. Stop Rot is your best ally.

George is right again

The stop rot is the way to go. Get a class full and stick the nose right in it. Put it on the ears, face and all over.

Just the way I was taught. If I just squirted water would have loosened up the freezer burn? I thought that I had made my water wetter! Thanks for stopping somebody from taking bad advice from me. How does the Lysol set me up for slip? I have been extremely lucky and never had a slip that stopped me from mounting. I take way to long to get my prep done and I live nervous. Im in and out of the freezer and read NOT to let that happen. The man who teaches me said not to read so much. <shrugging shoulders> I have never had the opportunity to use stop rot. It isnt in the shop I learn in.
I should buy some and have it on hand when the inevidable happens.
I would like to email you a question about my tanning. If you are available for that Id appreciate it. I dont want to post this question and start a problem. Thanks as usual.

y, This is really not a problem if you plan to tan the skin. Skin as though all is fine, salt, flesh, dry, rehydrate (lips will plump back up)if they aren't plump enough for you inject with some water ,pickle, tan. The toes on the fox probably are burned as well-not a problem, skin as far as possible and remove last of toes after rehydrating. Enjoy, Aaron H.
