Overseas Rowland Ward legal?

Submitted by Mike on 7/12/05 at 2:26 PM. ( extinctflatpicker@hotmail.com ) 65.97.177.234

I know someone in England who has a Rowland Ward white-tiger skin. The head is stuffed and the rest is just like a rug. It's about 4 ft long from tail to nose.

Is this legal to import since it's Rowland Ward? I have no idea, I'd appreciate some advice! Thanks!

Mike

Roland Ward is a criteria like Boone & Crocket , SCI or other Measuring & records of animals.
A 4 foot tiger would not even meet there minimums for Roland Ward or SCI so someone has fed you a line of garbage.
On top of that No it would not be legal to import to the USA because it is a CITES animal.
As for other countries you would need to check their importation laws.

He's clueless ad asked for advice.

> On top of that No it would not be legal to import to the USA because it is a CITES animal.

This is not correct. Wolves and Lynx are CITES II and are imported to the USA all the time.

Just because it's on CITES doesn't necessarily make it illegal. Only CITES I is illegal.

What RJ meant to say is, it's not legal to import in to the USA because it's a CITES I animal, thus not legal for trade.

How about this. Instead of buying the tiger skin, donate the money you would have spent on the tiger, to a tiger conservation program.

The original Roland Ward?

Maybe he means it was mounted by the taxidermist Roland Ward?

Rowland Ward 1848-1912
Rowland Ward Ltd was at one time the best known taxidermy businesses in the world.

Roland, along with his brother, had been trained by his father Henry, who had at one time been employed by John Audubon, a famous American naturalist. After working for his father for some years, Rowland started his own business c1872 in Harley Street. He later had premises at 158, 166 and 167 Piccadilly. YES JIM! I meant Roland Ward. Sorry for the retarded mistake. It's a guy I met in England. He has a couple Roland Ward pieces, stamped with Roland Ward and a date. I don't doubt they are genuine at all. I'm just asking is it LEGAL to import ROLAND WARD items, since it's from SO long ago?

Mike

Nope. CITES I are not legal for trade. You can get a pre-act cert. for it, but it cannot leave the country or state where it currently resides.

Call USFWS for better, more thorough info.

fws.gov for info.

Infamous "-" your are wrong again!

Infamous "-" your are wrong again! CITES 1 animals come in to the country every day! i.e.. Leopards, marcopolo sheep, Bontibok, etc., and CITES 1 animals like tigers if permitted can get shipped almost any ware in the world except here in the US.

It is our ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT. That prohibits the import of certain CITES listed species. For example there are many legally shot cheetah under CITES permits every year in Namibia. and you can export these to any county in the world except ours.

The sad part is being part of CITES our government is bound my the rules of CITES and is actually in violation of the act it self by denying entry to properly permitted species.

If our bureaucrats would ever get their heads out of there asses this could change but don't hold your breath. As long as we still give liberal democrats any power there will never be a change!

Hey mjvaden, can you e-mail me?
