Taxidermy publications and black bears

Why don't the publications write more on black bears? I searched all my back issues of Breakthrough, Taxidermy Today, outlook, and found very little information on black bears. I have nearly every back issue and really cant find much information such as mounting techniques, rugging, reference photo's, study guide, etc.

Wondering why, arguably, the most mounted North American big game animal doesn't receive more attention. And before I get the "lets see you start your own publication" or "quit bitching" replies, I'm making an observation not intended to offend anyone.

Just an observation Andy, we killed 200,000+ deer in NY last year and only 1000+ bears, deer in our state are arguably the most mounted big game animal. But you do have a point on bears though, there isn't much written on them. And the reference pictures just aren't there either, but then again what taxidermist has penned bears for references. They stink, they have an attitude and aren't as pretty as deer....

in an older American Taxidermist Magazine, one on rugging for sure. Roger Martin also did one or two on Bears.

Yep, I do belive deer shoulder mounts far outnumber bear, but not sure on lifesize mounts. Thanks Mike for taking the time to find the issues. I had the opportunity last year to get some good reference photos at a local fair. They had bears doing tricks and such then had them on display. I wasnt into mammals at the time so I didnt bother-- what a mistake.

Breakthrough index

Andy- It took about 30 seconds, my index is in the bookcase right next to the computer!
BT publishes an index that lists everything they have had in their magazine by several methods; by species, by author, etc.
I asked Larry at our show in June when they were going to update the index (last one published was several years ago) and he told me soon!
He also said that they were going to publish an update every month on the website - how handy is that!
