Have a customer who has neglected to send his deposit for this Life size Black Bear skin. I't looks like it will become my property via PA laws and the US post office. Sent him 2 certified letters etc. The bear was weighed gutted at 587lbs. Gestimated to be a true 612 lb bear.
The fur is Beautiful! Big Big Big! What is the value of such a skin tanned or raw salted. Any help would be appreciated.

Absolute full retail, of a black bear that large as you have stated with the full life size skin in excellent condition and suitable for life size mounting that is properly fleshed, split and turned with NO problems such as cut up face, bald spots, slice marks etc, would be $100.00 per foot. Measured from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Now this is a FULL RETAIL price to the public.
A taxidermist would not be willing to pay you such a high price. Within the industry, there is a wholesale diff of roughly 50%.
Many bears are sold each year for $45 to 100 for the skins at a wildlife auction, wholesalers, etc. The area of the country that you are in and what someone is WILLING to pay is always the ultimate
bottom line.
Oh, just in case you want to know, we would be interested in buying this bear. Contact us at the address above. You can also go to our website at: WWW.ABCustomTaxidermy.com
I have been offered much more than the $300 or so you claim is the going rate. You are off by 3 times the amount. that is just tanned. I understand retail at $100 per foot. But this NJ bear is in really great shape. I can mount it and get over $2000 so Giving it away is not an option.
And your work looks like it is 30 years old. Prices arent bad for that quality though ! Good Luck
N.J. had one bear hunt 2 seasons ago and the largest checked in was I beleive was in the high 400s in weight. There were some road kills in that weight class a few years ago, Fish and Game took those. Never heard of any one harvesting that size bear, would have made the news.
Ernie,
....And you have WHAT to show for your talent? The wind blows all the time and a lot is from your way.
It was the third largest bear taken in Allamuchy forest, officially tagged and weighed in in at either 587 or 578. According to the man who had taken it. I have no reason to not believe him. It is by far the largest Black bear I have worked on in 15yrs. And I have worked on a few over 400lbs. At Jim Kelly's shop and also at Wild life preservations.
I haven't lived in NJ for 4 years now. So I haven't really paid attention to what goes on over there. But this bear is huge.
I allready have an offer that seems more than fair from someone but am not sure if I wan't to sell it as a skin. I should mount it than sell it, quality work on that size Black bear should sell easily
The bear was 518 guestimated weight by the game commission. I called my Brother in law who referred this so called friend of his to me and he clarified that it weight 487 on a scale. Sorry! Yes even people like me make mistakes. LOL Peace and Love
Black bears are a dime a dozen.
I can get what you're talking about for $150.
Hope you can sell it locally because you can't advertise it on eBay.
I sure haven't heard of "Ernie who used to live in NJ who's greatest claim to fame is almost possessing some deadbeat's black bear skin that's 2/3 the size of a Canadian trophy black bear and extremely oversold".
F*ck You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Ernie,
= got you mad and you were bad.

Hey I looked up ='s ip adress and he is in eastern OHIO then I looked up the prices charged in that area. average of $300 or less a deer after the cost of the form tanning eyes ,hide paste, dealing with a customer time fleshing, salting, mounting, finishing etc,... I make more profit doing whole-sale work for a few well established shops and make more than you do just for putting the mount together and returning it to them. So I have no claim to fame but I do make more Money than you do,! And for my family and me that's what is important. LOSER!!
Ernie,
Understand you had a little legal trouble a while back? Want everyone else to know?.....Perhaps WE will tell, mr goodie tooshoes!
Only legal trouble I ever got in was, I had gotten caught smokin a joint when I was 19 yrs old. 19 yrs ago. So go ahead and post some lies and more bullsh*t so I can find out who you. Hide behind your typing big P*SSY. You obviously aren't man enough to state your name. As for the taxidermy never had any problems. So Kiss my A$$. And get a real life.
ever saw at that price either tanned or green or salted was an utter piece of crap, and they sure as hell weren't the size of the bear Ernie has. Just curious what a matched set of lifesize mule deer skin and velvet antlers scoring in the 220's would bring. Oh wait, some dumbass would want to trade a turtle shell or some other bullcrap for it, let alone actually paying what it's worth.
