Taxidermy smells in bear hides

Submitted by Carla on 8/22/05 at 10:15 AM. ( ) 64.12.116.201

My husband sent two bear hides to the taxidermy and they came back with a terrible smell. We have had the skins about 9 years and the smell is still as bad as the day the arrived from the taxidermist. Is there anything I can use to clean or spray on the hides to get rid of that chemical smell? Thanks for any help anyone can give!

Try Febreeze first

Carla, try using febreeze first,it usually helps, but if it doesn't there are stronger odor killers on the market.

9 years?

Without seeing or smelling this thing, I fear making a judgement, but I know 9 years is excessive. There is no way any chemical, other than the tan preserving the skin, can be emitting a smell. There's an underlying cause of this. It sounds as if you have loose skins or rugs and not mounts. I'd take them to a QUALIFIED taxidermist and have them looked at professionally before I started any other treatments.
