I have a customer who wants to have an old "40 year old" black bear rug refelted. The skin is in decent shape, but is too brittle to sew. What are my options? Muslin/Caulk on the back to reinforce?
Thanks in advance

I refurbish 30+ old rugs a year.Once the old felt and backing is removed, you will need to vulcanize the old leather, then hot glue your new felt border on or the sewing machine will perforate the old leather and it will tear away. Then you will need to pad and hand sew your backing on. The vulcanizing material I use comes in 10 gallon drums, which does 10-15 rugs. This would be a large investment for such a small project. Liquid latex and cheesecloth is another alternative, although not as strong and penetrating as the vulcanizing compound I purchase. Call or e-mail me with any furthur questions. Or you may consider sending it my way for repair, I can give you a quote.
