I have shipped mounts that can go UPS, but a mountain lion is too big and I assume has to go common carrier. Anybody have any suggestions how to get this from New England to Kentucky safely and as economically as posible? I have built crates within boxes, would it be better to make a plywood box for it? I hear things shipped this way get picked up with fork lifts and aren't always handled carefully. Suggestions appreciated, thanks.

I do it from Washington state to Alaska at least once a year. Build your crate/box on a pallet, or attach 4x4's to the bottom so they can get the forklift under it. Attach your mount to the box. I deliver my stuff to the trucking company in Washington myself. It is put on a trailer, and then the whole trailer is loaded onto a barge for transport to Alaska. Less than a month ago I shipped a wolverine, 2 geese & 2 sheefish with no problems. In the past I have sent full grizzly mounts, otter, lynx, foxes, and many heads & birds with no problems. For sensitive cargo they have little tip and shock indicators that they will stick to the outside of the crate to let them & you know if the box has been handled roughly. I use 1x2's for framing the smaller crates, with 1/4 or 3/8 plywood, and for bigger ones I use 1x4's, 2x4's, & 2x2's with 1/2" plywood or OSB. Use screws to put it together. I've yet to ever have any damage. Good luck!
from illinois to texas - made my own crate out of 2 x 2's - arrived safely with no problems
Cheep, fast and fairly reliable. But do pay for the insurance. The only drawbach is you have to take the pagkage to the airport. and your client will have to pick it up at the airport. I shipped a full body bear fron Cleveland, OH. To texas for $115.00 that included $4000.00 Insurance
