Hi there.....I've just picked up a beautiful shunk off the highway. No Smell yet....We trap in the winter and skin alot of animals but have no experience with skunk...Any help would be appreciated. I would like to do a lifesize mount for my own cabin. I'm also concerned about it not being prime. Winter is still coming. Regards Vikki

Well it is as good as its going to get as far as that particular skunk goes... Split it down the legs and belly and be very, very, very careful around the scent glands in the rear. If it is still part frozen you may have better luck. I was'nt careful enough and ended up burning my clothes the day I skenned a skunk...

Regardless how well you skin your skunk

there's going to be some residual skunk "essence" , start a fire with green leaves, put the skunk on a stick and pass through the smoke a few times, something about the chlorophyl a fire reaction absolutely negates the smell of a skunk, or anything else. I got sprayed in the face when a child and my grandpop did this to me and it worked, I now do it to all skunks I skin.

Hairslip

Early skunks usually get hairslip, so be careful.

yea i got a biology project to do...and i plan on skinning the skunk and then boiling off it's meat and reconstructing it's skeleton. The way i was told to do it was to freeze it and cut out it's sack so the spray won't get anywheres
