colorado animal ID

Last week my father and I were hunting in southern Colorado near the New Mexico line. We came across an animal that resembled a small fox. It really looked like a fox squirrel only four times as big. This animal was dark brown to reddish with a fox face and a bushy tail. It climbed a tree like a rocket. It had short legs like a squirrel. When it went up the tree it would look down at me and my horse. When I would approach the tree it would run down the back side and 40 or 50 yards to the next tree. It never would give me a good look. Can someone help me ID please?

stole my bowling ball thinking it was a walnut!

anyways.... just go to google and click on 'images', then do a search for coati mundi and they'll be like thousands of pics. I do know that coati mundis tend to have a ringtail but i don't know if it is always apparent. But i am sure i will get corrected by someone who actually knows what they're talking about LOL

i thought that initially too wilson....

but i thought martens were more minky than foxy? But i don't claim to be an expert. Oh well maybe he'll do a search on both and let us know one way or the other. Is there any such thing as a red 'grey fox'? That crossed me pea sized mind as well. But theyre not exactly agile when in trees.

There are Pine Martens in that area. I'm unaware of any Coatimundia in that area. Could have been a Ringtail Cat as they do live in that area also. Wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. Pine Marten do not have the ringtail or a red face.?
