hide paste won't stick

Submitted by E. Anderson on 11/25/05 at 6:16 PM. ( ) 68.217.224.89

Has anyone else had problems with hide paste not sticking? I used some hide paste (I think it was tecnaglue) on two different bobcats, and it didn't seem to stick at all. It just sort of rolled up like elmer's glue does when it is rubbed. I rasped the manikin well, but it didn't stick at all. Any suggestions?

Stop using dry preserve

Sounds like you are using dry preservative with a latex based glue. The borax causes problems with the latex and causes it to ball up. Tan your hides and you won't have that problem, but if you have to use dry preserve, use a dextrin based hide paste or one that specifies it is compatable with dry preserve.

Used McKenzie TAn

No, I actually used the McKenzie tan system. Could it be that the hide was too moist when I mounted it?

Huh...

I use Krowtan on all my small mammals and use buckeye supreme or dextrin when I want more work time. I've only used McKenzie once when I was at Joe Meder's. We actually hung the cape up overnight to let it dry somewhat and only slightly rehydrated it to wash off the excess oil. I wouldn't think it would be a problem though. I'd try a different paste, a water based paste won't be affected by the damp hide. I can't say enough about the krowtan though, pretty easy to use and makes for an easy to mount skin and a nice finished mount, especially if you wash the skin in conditioning shampoo after you tan it.(fur bearers only)

Thanks, Bill

Thanks for the info, Bill. I think I'll give Krowtan a try. By the way, you said you use Krowtan on small mammals. How about deer?

Sherwin Williams Clay based wall paper paste.

I dont have the stock number handy, but its a very good product. Has mold resistence and mildew retarders and will work with tanned hides or DPed.

E try some waterbase Epo-Grip
