skinning a stinky coyote !

Yesterday a customer here in Texas brought me a stinky coyote. He said he wanted me to tan the hide boy does this thing ever stink. He said that he had it in there meat locker and it was in there and when I recived it it was on ice but several bags covered him. I already checked for slippage and there was none. He shot it in the shoulder and some wet blood fluid leeched on the neck really smells. Does any body know of a way to skin this out so that I might be able to prevent a smelly situtation. I froze it right after I got it in my deep freeze. Should I thaw it out hanging up and skin down wind of it or plug his anal vent with a paper towel coated with fabreeze so the smell won't be so bad any suggestions how to take of his skin and not have to endure or lessen the smell. Any help is apprecaited.

freezing it made it double hard plus to skin without cutting nicks and holes in it. Nothing you can do about the smell except skin it outside. Thaw it out hanging upside down. Learn to turn jobs like this down.

Use some Mentholatum or Vick's under your nose. Helps some with having to smell the damn thing. BP

Matt,

Try burning scented candles while you skin, it does help a little. But once you start skinning it and it penetrates your nose, clothes etc., you'll hardly smell it anymore... good luck with stinky..

Thanks Alot I will try those ideas

Thanks Becky and Tomdes I will try both the scented candles and the Vick's. Jim your right I have decided to telll customers not to do that,if they bring them to me whole like that then they need to be deep frozen fresh or just killed.

Deep frozen or just killed

It's been my experience that either way, they'll still stink. They'll roll in whatever's available, be it crap, rotted carcasses, or whatever, to mask their own scent. With that in mind -- break out the Vicks, cause when he thaws, he's gonna stink.

Critter smell

Matthew, Hey, it's just a little stink. No big deal really, just get into it and by the time you finish it won't seem so bad. I skinned a fragrant skunk a couple of days ago and by comparison that coyote ain't all that smelly. Taxidermy involves many jobs that might seem challenging at first but when you get a few into your past it gets much easier. Enjoy, Aaron H.

From my experience coyotes stink no matter what. Like Warren said they will roll in anything that stinks. I had a guy bring me one that he had gut shot so you can imagine. The Vicks is a miracle worker in a situation like this.
