Submitted by Dave on 1/15/06 at 9:44 PM. ( )

I got a red fox in the other day and it looked ok but when i was skining it out i reallise that there was somthing wrong with the tail and feet and face . It seemed like dried mud but it was in the skin. The skin was cracked and dried looking. Like i said the fur looked ok but looking closer at it dont look good. Does anybody have any idea what this is. Thanks

Sounds like your fox has Mange. I do some trapping and caught a few coyotes and fox that had it a couple years ago. It looks like a hard crusty callouse, almost like dried mud. One of the coyotes was so bad, both hind quarters were covered, and there was no hair on the tail. It even had it around the muzzle. Pretty sad site. I'd be really careful if you have any pets around, as it is highly contagious. I can't say for sure if this is what it is without seeing it, but it sure sounds like it. Hope this helps.
