Last night I skinned out my first gray fox, is it normal to have to make a small cut in the rear foot area to get the hide down over the the ankle area to get to the foot? I just could not get the hide down to the foot without making this cut to relieve the skin.

Yes it is. The front feet you can turn all the way without splitting. Fox and coyotes I always had to make a relief cut on the back foot.
