How do you make a snare?

I'd like to know how to make a snare correctly. I've tried many times but I'm just not doing it right!

Are you talking making the cable/wire part of the snare - or hanging it to catch an animal, or both?

IF you are a beginner - you gotta tell us a bit more - what you are hoping to catch in the snare, etc.....
you may search on a trapping website - of which I know there are at least a few.

I'd like to make both (the cable/wire, and wondering how to hang it) I'm hoping to catch opossums or squirrels with it.

And, I am a beginner, by the way. I forgot to mention that in my last post.

Try going to this link. This is a guy from Galena Alaska that made a video on making snares. It also has a forum which shows pictures of how to make them. I make all of my snares here in Alaska and all you need is the cable, locks and small nuts that are pounded down for the stops. A ball pein hammer is all that you need to make them. As for small critters and even large ones, you can make your locks out of washers that are bent in the middle and then drilled on each side. Also go to www.snareshop.com and look at their site. You may just find that it would be easier to purchase them in the sizes that you want. For a start though, if you are snaring small stuff like rabbits and the like, then go buy some 1/16th 7x7 or 1x19 cable the second numbers represent the strands of the cable ( 7 strands with 7 strands of wire in each strand ) some types are better for keeping their shape. for these use a nickle size washer and bend in the middle at 90 degrees. drill a small 1/16th hole in each side of the washer for the lock. You will have to play with it but one end of the cable goes through one of the holes and then to the end of that place a small nut on the cable and pound flat as a stop. Then you want to place the other end of the cable through the other hole and to the end of that use a slightly larger nut and make a loop on the end and pound out the nut. Make sure that the snare tightens up easily but locks when trying to open the loop.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. I made up my own version of a snare (before I realized this post had been replied to) and if it doesn't work I'll check out those websites, and/or try to make one the way you suggested.

Thanks again!
