free runnin/ locked snares

I know this isnt exactly a taxidermy but im curios wats the difference

because over here (uk) only free runnin traps are legal

The difference is the lock. A locking snare doesn't "let up" when the animal stops pulling, the noose will never open back up and the animal cannot escape. A "free running snare" would also be called a "relaxing lock" or a "cable restraint" over here in the USA.
