Pronghorn!

I've checked the archives about this and haven't found a direct answer. What do I do with pronghorn horns to darken them up after their mounted. Do I use paint, linseed oil, motore oil? Can someone tell me what to use? I need a pretty thorough explanation too due to I have no idea how to do this (first pronghorn). I would also appreciate that if you tell me what to use that you can tell me where to get it. I am doing a pronghorn european mount with an imitation antelope skull from McKenzie taxidermy supply for my dad for fathers day.

Often they don't need darkened. You can use Scott's Liquid Gold(hardware or grocery store),or if you need to paint, use Lifetone Hydromist Dark Brown, thin with water so it's not full strength(suppliers above). No motor oil!

I use...

extra virgin olive oil. pour a little on a lint free cloth and rub on. LESS THAN A TEASPOON FULL will do an antelope. It leaves a slightly darker and clean appearance....not shiney or glossy! It is natural/organic which I prefer over synthetic oils.

Easton, you didn't look in the archives

I know you didn't because I answered this exact same question within the last month. Nothing beats 50/50 linseed oil/turpentine.

i use lifetone hydromist which is water baed paint. black. just don`t put alot of paint on them. slowly mist it on and leave the ivory tips alone. if you boil the horns off and then put them back together and mout it, the horns will need some type of color back on them or they`ll look like crap. mist the black paint on until you like the color and then use a satin gloss and they`ll look great. any kind of oil will let the dust build up on them faster. try my method and you`ll love the results.
