I recently got in older russian boar with really thick armor. They tried to tube it originally, then froze it and had it shipped to me. It is mostly thawed out; however, I can't manage to tube it the rest of the way because of the shield. Should I just cut down the top of the back like a deer? Please help! Thank you!

You may have to cut it. Ive had a couple that I did that way. Good Luck
Set a spike someplace where you can force it up inside the boar's mouth and throat. Then, with a VERY sharp scalpel, peel the hide down in sections. Continuously check for those ear canals and once you sever them, it should just roll right down. Without using this method, caping the hog is like trying to drill a hole through Jello. The spike will give you leverage you need to pull it off cleanly.
Fleshing and shaving? Now that's going to be a chore. I hope you have a machine and a good blade. The blade won't be when you finish.
I just started on a Boar tonight. This is a unique fellar! A 13 year old girl killed him at Bostic Plantation in South Carolina. Somebody had shot this boar with what looked to be a 38,before she killed it. This 38 bullet was lodged over its left eye. And they want it incorporated into the mount. Along with a brass plate saying "38 SPECIAL". Well they brought it to me yesterday and since my freezers are full I caped it out tonight. But to my amazement I found a broadhead from a arrow. It had penetrated the skull cap and blinded the left eye of the hog. Anyway I went through about 10 scapel blades getting this hog capped. Now the really fun part starts. I took photos of the skull if anyone is interested in seeing this oddity.
Good luck with your hog!

I just had my first boar experience. It was a 680 pounder taken by my son. I could barely move the head and cape. To skin the head I ran a small chain through the mouth and out the windpipe. I attached the chain to a short length of 2x2 to keep it from pulling thru the mouth (like the bit on a horse bridle). I then attached the other end of the chain to a winch to lift the thing up. Skinning went fairly easily after that but it took me two days to flesh! Those shields are something else.
But Conley will put it on his website if YOU suggest it, huh? I see how it is. Let me guess where he put my innertube idea.......
interested in skull's pics!can you email me?
or maybe put them on the net!
