I skin out the toes completely and then roll Critter clay up in 1/8th inch rolls and freeze it. When I go back to mount, I just shove the clay down the toes and break the clay inside the skin where the pad starts. Then clay the pad with fresh clay. Afterwards, I can bend the toes without worrying about them kinking.
Randy,
I can`t comment on the chaulk because I haven`t used that method, but I have used clay for the last 20 years and have had great results. As long as you skin the feet down to the toes as far as you can clay works great. You also have aday or two before the clay really sets so you can tweak the toes just right. Hope this helps.

I just tried it in a coyote foot of my own . And it didn't get enough air circulation to cure inside the damp leather. This was a week ago and I would have to check it again to see if it hardened yet. I had to go back and pin that one leg to get it to stand up.
i just did a badger and as anyone who has mounted one of them knows their pads are very distinctive - i filled the toes and pads with silicone (injected with caulking gun) - i let them set up overnight and when i wnt back they were dry - i added clay to finsih feet and everything came out fine - i haven't tried this on coyotes yet but i plan to next week
