Having trouble fleshing a coyote hide, help

Submitted by aj on 3/19/06 at 2:22 AM. ( ) 70.105.157.60

Hi, im i nthe process of fleshing (first time iv done this) a coyote hide. I have it in the pickle right now. My fleshing knife was doing alright at getting some fat off,,, but not much. There is still a lot of the hide that has fat and what i think is the membrane on it, and relal the only way to get it off is to carefully put my knife into the thick part of the fat/membrane area cut a little so that i can get a hold with the tips of my finger and pull and cut it at the same time to remove.

is there a better way to do this? im just gonna tan this and hang it on the wall. the tanned side isnt a big worry (comestic wise) does it have to spotless? and is this something thatll annoy me to death but has to be done in a VERY slow pace?

plus are there any videos out there to show how to flesh and different tools etc?

thanks!

aj

Wire Wheel

aj, you need to use a wire wheel on that type of hide. I find that it's just too thin to run it on a Flesher properly. It's the same as de-fatting a bird. If you have the proper stiffness of wheel it will take the membrane and fat right off. If it starts to get too greasy rub it down with Borax and keep wheeling it.
You really need to get all of this fat off or it will turn rancid and the bugs will move in. After it is de-fatted put it in a degreaser to clean it then tan it.
At least that's how I do it.

Jim

I use a pressure washer for all fleshing and it works great! Rent a 3000 PSI with a turbo tip and don't let it stay in one spot to long. Then you will give away your fleshing knife.
