BLACK BEAR patching

Submitted by ron on 3/22/06 at 10:47 PM. ( ) 66.218.28.50

Hi, I mounted a black bear. When the outfitter skinned it they cut a quarter size hole in the snout. Right where the brown hair and the black hair meet. I tried patching it with the piece that was cut off but I still notice the patch due to the short hair. Any idea's on how to better conceal the patch? thanks for any help, Ron

Mount is For...

Who's the mount for? You or a customer? If it's for you, just quit being so picky. You have a case of "the princess and the pea".

If it's for a customer, send them a photo or 2 on e-mail and see if they notice the slip spot or where you did the patch job, if they knew of the hole. If they like what they see - don't try to over-perfect it. Just do a very good job of painting and blending the area during finishing.

The other answer is to "flock and paint". I used mache and Apoxie-Sculpt, textured with a razor blade, and then painted to match or to blend, to re-do slip spots on my most recent mounts. They look pretty good - good enough for the customer.
