Namibia and South Africa are each to be allowed to kill and export five black rhinoceros per year. It will cost about £25 000 - £50 000! The money raised from the sales will help pay for improved conservation efforts.

I don't know where the guy is in the previous post. Looks like you're not U.S. Just because they let you kill them doesn't mean the U.S. will let you import it. For example, polar bears...

POLAR BEARS?

Went Polar Bear hunting, in a designated area of course, a few years back...my buddy shot one and it was not a problem at all bringing it back. A client called last week, he just shot a 8.5 footer...and is bringing it back...where is your info coming from? All of these in the designated areas...YES...there are areas that you can shoot one but cannot bring it back.

Might have been a better example; you can still take them in Namibia, but no way are they coming into the states.

I stand corrected

South Africa has opened 5 tags for Black Rhino $150000.00 US each. That is a fact. If you have that kind of money to burn on a hunt you're not joe blow blue collar and regular rules don't apply, besides if you think those tags aren't already bought and paid for...

Check CITIES

This response submitted by Jen on 4/5/06 at 8:13 PM. ( ) 70.136.202.61

Check CITES listing (Convention for International Trade of Endangered Species). Black rhinos are listed and therefore cannot be imported into signatory countries (US). They do tranqulizer "hunts" in SA, Namibia and Botswana so if you really want your want to "hunt" a black rhino you can try that avenue--probably a LOT cheaper

Get the facts right

If the specimen is captive bred and harvested under an approved management program, ie the ranch in South Africa holding this stock HAS an approved breeding program in accordance to CITES and registered with the US secretary to CITES, yes it can be imported privately.
Many species appendix 1 to CITES and captive bred are traded. Some wild sourced species as well.
Classic example is Leopard ( Pardus pardus ) Appendix 1 to CITES but regularly taken and imported into the USA.
Sport hunted polar bears can be imported into the USA provided they are for private purposes. It is not permitted to purchase and import for resale purposes hides of polar bears.
Check the Marine mammal act for other requirements regarding polar bears.
