Thanks for all the advice. Let's see. The pelts (coyote and mink heads) and the feathers have been "airing out" since the 15th of this month. I strung them all up and have been hanging them outside (on sunny warm days only) and hung in the spare room with the ceiling fan on at night. They still smell! In fact, on the first night when I brought them home, they were so bad that I stuck them in this small closet in our bathroom and put a towel under the door. The next morning I started hanging them out 24/7, but I found four dead spiders and a couple of mosquitos on the floor in the closet. I figured I would put them in a different room every night and not worry about any bugs.
I was told to store the rabbit fur in cardboard boxes because the fur would start to pull out if I kept them in a plastic bag. I have them in a dresser drawer in the craft room. I have been keeping the tanned leather (deer, elk, buffalo and cow) in one of those plastic storage stackable drawer set so everything is handy.
I also pick up leather and fur jackets from good will and garage sales to cut up to make things out of. I guess I have been very lucky not to get anything buggy so far. I'm also a zoo keeper and out of habbit anything new I bring home I keep separate from the established group for a few days to make sure things dont start crawling on their own.
Any other suggestions on storage and mothball smell removal would be great.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer.
Lucy
