Sewing Knots

What is the best type of knot to use once you've sewn up a section of hide? I'm having problems keeping the knot tight.

After you've sewn up a section of hide, how do you tie if off? What type of knot do you use so it keeps the sewn section tight and doesn't unravel.

Surgeons knot

You make the first loop as you would in a simple overhand knot. The second loop, however, is made like a square knot but you roll the thread over TWICE instead of once. After I to that, I still pull the thread back under the hide an inch or so(through the incision) and pull it through the cape before cutting it off.

Not sure I understand. I've only got one end of the thread. Do you pull a section of thread back out and use it as your second end?

Chuck, start using double thread

Use Fireline in small weight lines. It will run like a single thread. When you get to the end, snip ONE THREAD and make one last stitch with the single thread. THEN use the surgeon's knot.
