Giraffe... Several Questions...

Submitted by John on 7/14/06 at 12:42 PM. ( aka_sleep@yahoo.com ) 24.1.154.165

I recently acquired a giraffe hide from a friend that has been in storage since their safari about a decade ago... It is somewhat dry, and I don't want to unfold it for fear of damaging the hide.

1. Is it legal? Particularly, could I restore it and sell some/all of it without the ATF knocking on my door?
2. Recommendations on restoration? (What needs to be done, can I do it, etc...) Any links would be helpful... I've read through the forum and haven't seen much about restoration of hides.
3. Is it worth the effort?

Thank you for your replies in advance...

Totally legal to sell

Not endangered or listed as thretened
AFT would not knock on door about it they are concerned with Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms
USFW would be the ones but they are not going to.
They are legal.

Thanks... I was kidding about the ATF... Then again...

I appreciate your input... Any thoughts on restoring the hide?

Try soaking it in water

That's how we rehydrate our hides but with it being so old it may not be any good any more. Worth a try, soak it in water for 8 hours and see what it does.

Kemal 4

Pick up some "Kemal 4" and add it into your warm water/salt bath. It will help relax the hide.
