closing bullet holes

Submitted by Henry on 12/20/99. ( )

I am a beginning taxidermist and I have a coyote that was shot wiht a deer rifle. It has a large exit wound. Do you sew the hole closed before mounting on the form or can you sew it afterwards? Is there a special stitching to use? OR, can I Pull it closed and hold it in place with hide nails, as I've seen done on a deer video?

close it now

Henry, It's best to close the hole, and any other holes before mounting. It would be a shame to find out that there's a piece missing when you mount it. It's also easier to clean and tan when it's not shredding.
