Squirrel Skinning

Submitted by Hunter on 3/21/99. ( )

Carl: Thanks for the reply on my preservative question! I've got another now.
As I passed in my first message, I just completed my fist squirrel.
It probably took me about 8 hours from start to finish in large part because as
I went along I paused to watch the video to ensure I was doing it right.
My question is this: do taxidermist's regularly skin a squirrel
and put it back in the freezer at some stage?....In other words, mount/fit it
to a manikin at a later date or do folks start and finish a squirrel in one
sitting? I treated my squirrel with borax as I went along then placed it in
a 50/50 alcohol/water bath for 10 minutes - Could it go into the freezer at that point?

Look forward to a reply. Thanks so much!!!!!

I quite often have to ( for one reason or another ) put skins in the freezer. I usually make sure the skin is soaking wet depending on how long it will be there, I may even put it in water in a freezer bag or container. You may want to try using Liqua Tan on your squirrels as it is quite common to freeze the skin after the tan is applied. if you like E-mail me and I can explain further what I mean. Also try to include your email address on here .. is polite etiquette to do so :)
