I know this sounds strange but I am trying to find Poly Resin and instructions for use but can't find anything. I live in Tampa, Florida and want to dip orchid blooms in poly resin to make beads out of real flowers. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Return to Molding and Casting Category Menu
This forum has recently become taxidermy specific molding and casting. However there is a somewhat regular contributor here who I believe is in Florida, he'd have the best sources for purchasing stuff locally. Maybe he'll see this and email you that info? You may also want to try embedding your pieces in something like epoxy or urethane. The archives are full of places to obtain these compounds. A couple to check are industrialpolymers.com and shopmaninc.com
Since when did this category become "taxidermy specific molding and casting." If someone is asking a question which isn't taxidermy related, whats the big deal. The Taxidermy Industry category is nothing more than a political posts. So you're saying, if someone has a question and it doesn't have anything to do with taxidermy, then they're not allowed to ask it. LMAO. And since when did you become the moderator of this category. You're a JOKE!
Umm Coyote - it's right on the page - so please so kind as to back off... Pasted from the heading of the molding category itself...
"The messages below are postings related to molding and casting procedures for taxidermy. Click here if you do not see Forum Category buttons to the left."
So there ya go - right on the page - 'molding and casting for taxidermy'. Since when did YOU become the moderator? Hypocrite. Geez. Besides - if you don't like my answer - offer one up thats better... I still told her places to find materials that may be better for her needs (polyester coatings are inferior to urethane and epoxy). Sorry - I just don't see what positive contribution you made to this thread. Just more typical bashing of people who ya don't agree with - far too common here...

Some weird double posting things goin on here... it cut part of my previous post and re-posted that... craziness! LOL!
btw - Jane?If you want more specific info you can also email me directly... I just didnt want to get into a whole off topic thing here - thats all =)
I did talk to Ken about this a long time ago about the number of non taxi rleated posts in the molding category and he said he had noticed it too. With the server change this week - I now notice the blurb at the top specifies taxidermy - so Im just trying to go by what Ken has set up - it's his place after all...
Now even when I DO say it isnt a taxidermy specific question - if you'd take the time to notice, you'd see that I do still offer help. Brett is in Miami and appears to know a lot about molding and casting - who better to give her specific info about sources of materials in the Florida area? And again, I did lead her in the right direction for alternate, superior products. How is it that you missed all that? I and Rod Rock have even posted links to other molding and casting forums and supply sites with instructional videos, tutorials and books.. LOTS of links... there are forums devoted to almost every aspect of molding and casting you can think of and they stay focused. If you post a question about carcasss casting on a cold cast bronze forum, it is likely to get removed so as to keep the focus of that forum intact. This makes it far easier for people who need to learn about those elements to get concentrated information. Likewise - if someone needs taxidermy related info and we know something is in the archives and tell them to search there - it REALLY sucks for them to have to read through post after post, hundreds of posts, about how to mold bumpers and make counter tops and headstones etc.
To sum it all up - by telling people where to go to get information specific to their particular project and keeping this one for taxidermy projects - it helps all parties involved. And that's what all these various forums are for - is to help people get clear information easily. Leading people to alternate sources of quality information and products is NOT a bad thing...
You're a JOKE! You must have been beat up a lot in school as a kid. I can see you now telling the teacher that someone is chewing gum in class. And you told on them because it was your moral oblagation to do so. You're lucky you weren't in my unit in Nam. Someone one would have frag your a$$ for opening your mouth too much, and to the wrong people. I'm sure if Ken doesn't want non-taxidermy related subjects on the forum he'll delete them. And to call me a hypocrite you have a lot of room to talk. But like I told you before. It's not worth arguing about anything with you, Because your like a woman with PMS. What comes out of your mouth is right, and everyone else is wrong. Have a good night Pal.
If Im not wirtht hte itme to argue with - why do you start stuff in the first palcfe then run around belolya ching equ
If Im not worth the time to argue with - why do you start stuff in the first palce then run around belly aching afterwards, equating molding and casting issues to geting ones a$$ fragged in Nam?!?! Where the hell did THAT come from? That is some pretty hard core stretching - I hope you don't stretch your capes to such a sick degree as well... Man you have some SERIOUS issues. And to use your example.. if Ken wanted my response gone - he could have taken care of that too - again - you are being hypocritical - telling me to not make comments about how I respond - then going and doing it yourself. If ya don't like my posts Coyote - dont read them... if ya don't like arguing with me then don't make posts slammin me. It really is that simple.
LMAO! K - this is too goofy even for me... even I don't make that many typos - LOL! Double Post hell it would see Im in ;)
Jane since the other guys on here just want to fight and not answer your ? , then I will . First of all if you live in Tampa , you cant tell me your cant find a fiberglass supplier in your telephone book with all the boat builders in your area . Also try a hobby shop since you want casting resin . The instrutions should be on the can . One more think . if your imbedding flowers , you will have to dry them first which will probably make them lose their color . If you imbed them as fresh flowers , the water content inside the flower will cook and the resin will be a cloudy color and you would be able to see them . If you've never done this before , your in for a surprise . Its not as easy as you think or everyone would do it . Rick
P.S. Raven , what are you doing on here at 5 am ? Get some sleep , lol .
Fiberglass Coatings. Fiberglass Coatings 3201 28th Street North St. Petersburg, FL 33713 (800) 272-7890 (727) 327-6691 fax. ...
Many will sell you a gallon for about 45 bucs, if you buy it in bulk its even cheaper.
Since you are in Florida, check for SunCoast Fiberglass, they will sell you as much as you can afford.
Unless I misunderstood though guiys - it sounds like she needs clear resin - so the boat stuff and auto stuff isn't suitable. The only auto and boat stuff I have ever seen is the classic pink/amber stuff. Thats why I was thinking either epoxy or urethane... you can get them both in clear and they are designed for embedding and are stronger than the polyester. If she did want to go polyester, I figured a local source woudl be her optimal choice. If however Jane you don't mind shipping charges - go to the molding and casting chemicals section of the WASCO website at taxidermy.com. I believe cast'n craft is another clear poly res that can sometimes be found in hobby stores. If Brett sees this though - he can probably hook you up with a supplier in Florida.
And Rick - I didnt't WANT to fight - but I'm not gonna run from one either - LOL! And the 5 am thing? Yuck - thats what time I get up for work man, I start at the shop EARLY. I'm off at 3 though - WooHoo!
Jane,
Here is a free book to help you out step by step. You can also get the resin you are looking for at a good craft store. You need a good clear casting resin. Not fiberglass resin. The book is at this web address.
http://www.eti-usa.com/books/castinbk/page1.htm
and the home addres for this co is
http://www.eti-usa.com
You will find ETA-USA resin in all the good craft stores.
Give them a call and ask were the closest place is to pick it up
707-443-9323 No I dont work for them lol.
Rod Rock
Thank you all so much!
I am looking for clear resin but didn't know that I could use epoxy. I thought epoxy got too hot and would fry the flower. I will investigate that option as well.
Also, I'm happy to have the source for the book.
I think I will try them all and see what happens.
Raven, sorry for the non taxidermy posting, I just thought Flora was close enough to Fauna to be included.
AGAIN, many thanks to all of you who took the time to help me.
Polyester resin gets hot too. All of these things are considered 'thermo set plastics' meaning they all generate heat upon curing. Probably one of the best products to play with is Clear Elegance from IndustrialPolymers.com. When cured - it looks like water and is actually designed to make fake water in vases of flowers.
Glad we could help =)
You know, it will be almost impossible to keep it Taxidermy oriented, the reason I am saying this is because I found this site by searching for casting and molding, and I dare say many other readers have as well.
I originally had no interest in Taxidermy, but after reading about it, and loving to fish, I ordered the magazine and really started getting into it.
I wish to find a school here in South Carolina where I can attend at night near Charleston.
So guys, don't beat anybody up too bad if they got here by accident, because it is so easy to do.
Thanks,
