Industrial Polymers Crystal Cast & Platinum Cured Silicone

Hello!

I am in the beginning stages of designing small pendants made from clear casting resin. I have read through most of this great forum and its archives on the subjects of clear casting, best types of resin, and silicone molding.

I kept seeing industrialpolymers.com mentioned and decided to go with their crystal cast 9016. The sales rep helped me a ton and then referred me to a guy at GT Products who could help me with platinum cured silicone to make my molds with. I made sure that I would not need a vacuum chamber for the resin, and he told me to use a plastic syringe for dispensing and that would get rid of the bubbles.

I then called the silicone guy and tell him what I want to do and with what casting material and he recommends the GT 1340 silicone.

Now, upon reading more about making silicone molds, I worry that I will need a vacuum chamber in order to make nice molds.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with this product or type of product and can tell me anything that I may be missing. I have emailed the sales rep for the silicone but wanted to get any info tonight, if possible.

Thanks for you time!

depends on lots of things

the casting resin should be degassed and pressure cast to get perfect results, even with a syringe when you mix it up there will be bubbles trapped in the plastic not huge ones just little bubbles, big enough to be seen and not big enough to float out on their own. it may help getting it good enough though.

and since its just a simple pendant any of the silicones should work fine.

your best bet is to just find you cheapest way to make or first one then hone your skills from there.

aka
if you read through most of this fourm and still need more info then you may be getting wrapped around the axle. just buy some stuff, start, then come ask questions when you have a problem. like NIKE just do it.

Thank You!

Thank you, jermh1! You are right, I was reading too much and getting wrapped up.

I ordered the things mentioned above and have been having a great time with the silicone. The resin will be here tomorrow and I am looking forward to working with it too.

I appreciate the help and really enjoy reading here, even if it is mostly about taxidermy. It is amazing how much you can apply that knowledge to other areas!
