preserving shedded snake skin

My grandson found a shed skin from a diamond back rattler. He would like to mount it. How can we treat the skin to preserve it? Also, any ideas for mounting would be appreciated.

You can't.

The shed "skin" is the outer layer of the epidermis. It is as dead as it is going to get. You may be able to have it placed in a shadowbox frame to keep, but other than keeping it dry and avoid handling it, there is little else to do except for keeping some moth balls along with it to prevent insects from destroying the memento. You may find some scientific display boxes on the internet in which to keep the skin. the cotton backing and glass top will allow viewing without touching and the moth balls can be hidden under the cotton.
